Williamson Act Contract Update

Community Development Agency

Marin County wants to help landowners and agricultural producers to preserve land for farming. The Marin County Assessor’s office offer tax benefits to landowners who use their land for commercial farming. This tax benefit relies on a state law known as the Williamson Act, or the California Land Conservation Act.

The Williamson Act allows landowners to enter into a contract with the County to restrict the use of their land to farming and to not subdivide it. In return, the County reduces their land's assessed value, decreasing their property taxes.

The Planning Division held listening sessions in October 2023. We received input on what works and identified issues with the program. We learned that the existing Board of Supervisor's Resolution 2000-135 isn't flexible enough. Participants suggested the program needs more flexible eligibility criteria and allowable uses.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, the Marin County Board of Supervisor’s will consider the Resolution updating the Williamson Act Rules and Procedures.

A staff report will be available via the Board of Supervisors website no later than Friday, May 31, 2024.
