New Voting System Questions

Lynda Roberts, Registrar of Voters, Elections

Why is Marin County getting a new voting system and what can voters expect?

The current voting system, including hardware and software, is 20 years old and can no longer be maintained or upgraded. The new system will include hardware and software that has been tested to the most current California Voting System Standards.

The new purchase will include:

  • Components required for end-to-end election administration—from ballot layout to final tally results.
  • More tally equipment located in the Elections Department to count the ever-increasing number of vote-by-mail ballots.
  • New accessible ballot marking devices at the polling places to meet the needs of voters with physical disabilities.

The new purchase will not include tally equipment at the polling places. Instead, ballots from the polling places will be counted centrally in the Elections Department on election night. Currently 28 of the 58 California counties tally their ballots this way, so we have models to follow as we enhance our polling place procedures.
