COVID-era Waivers for General Relief to be Lifted

San Rafael, CA – Temporary COVID-era aid such as emergency cash, extended benefits, and other work-related assistance are winding down now that the pandemic is no longer a federal emergency.

As part of this shift, the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services is preparing to transition its General Relief Program to pre-pandemic service levels. August 31 will be the last day of pandemic-era extended benefits and waived work requirements that have been in place since March 17, 2020.

Prior to the pandemic, the General Relief payments were limited to a maximum duration of six months and were subject to a mandatory work requirement. However, in March 2020, the Marin County Board of Supervisors acknowledged the pandemic-driven hardship experienced by residents and approved a waiver for both the time and work requirements.

Effective August 31, residents who have received benefits for six months or more and do not meet disability exemption status will be discontinued from the General Relief Program. Recipients who have received benefits for less than six months will continue in the program until they reach the six-month cap. All recipients discontinued from the program will have the opportunity to reapply six months after their benefits end or upon obtaining verification of a disability exemption.

“The health and well-being of our community remains our top priority,” said Sherry Parr, Marin HHS Social Service Program Manager. “Throughout the General Relief Program transition, we are dedicated to ensuring a seamless experience for all those impacted by the changes, every step of the way. We stand ready to assist those in need as we strive to create a stronger and more resilient community.”

A dedicated helpline is available at (415) 473-3450 for current General Relief Program recipients. Additionally, comprehensive program details, application forms, and more information can be accessed online from the General Relief Program webpage.
