The civic holiday, meant to raise awareness of voter registration and provide access to the democratic process to all legal voters, is part of the Elections Department’s efforts every year. This year, however, Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts is participating for two hours (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) to answer questions and address concerns at public tables. The nonprofit Canal Alliance plans to provide Spanish interpreters during the event.

“National Voter Registration Day is about participation,” Roberts said. “Democracy works best when people vote, so we want to remind them how important elections are – local and national.”

Traditionally, Marin County has a high voter participation rate, but according to data provided by the California Secretary of State’s Office, local residents who are eligible but not registered is almost 20,000.
