San Rafael, CA – The largest entertainment venue in Marin County, the 2,000-seat Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium (VMA) at Marin Center, will receive more construction upgrades than originally scheduled during its current renovation because of recently discovered concerns. The earliest anticipated reopening date is now late 2025 as the Department of Cultural Services and the Department of Public Works collaborate on the project.
Renovation of the VMA began in June 2023 to conduct necessary seismic and code improvements.
Renovation of the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired VMA began in June 2023 to conduct necessary seismic and code improvements. While inspections determined that the perimeter foundation and elements supporting the domed roof are structurally sound, engineers discovered that soil under the building’s foundation has settled substantially and caused concrete cracking, voids beneath the floor, and damage to drainage and sewer lines. Also, water intrusion over the years has damaged lift equipment, electrical equipment, and the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
“Public Works is engaging with our architects, structural engineers, and consultants to map out designs and plans for this work and ascertain the full scope of what can be accomplished during this construction period,” said Gabriella Calicchio, Director of Cultural Services. “In the best of all worlds, our reopening would feature many tangible changes — both functional and aesthetic — to the inside of the VMA, providing a more enhanced and secure environment for future events.”
Although the VMA remains closed for the near future, performances, events, and activities are still vibrant at the Marin Center in the Showcase Theater, Exhibit Hall, Bartolini Gallery, and fairgrounds. Visit the calendar of events for more information.
