Probation and Partners Work on Gang Enforcement

Unannounced check results in five violations of probation

San Rafael, CA – In response to a recent increase in gang activity around Marin County, gang members and their affiliates were subjected to unannounced probation searches October 9. Local law enforcement officers issued five violations of probation and witnessed several indicators of continued gang activity.

The Marin County Probation Department partnered with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, the San Rafael Police Department, the Novato Police Department, the California Department of Corrections and the FBI to conduct the searches in the Central Marin, Novato, and San Rafael.

Probation Department Supervisor Don Carmona reported that approximately 30 identified gang members and associates were contacted in the lengthy operation. The information gathered by officers will assist local law enforcement on developing solutions to the safety concerns in the community.

“Criminal gangs serve a purpose of making the general public an unsafe place with drug dealing, extortion, human trafficking and violence involving guns,” said Marin County Probation Chief Mike Daly. “We have seen a recent uptick of gang activity, and these enforcement contacts and searches and will be a sustained effort. I appreciate the collaboration among all our law enforcement partners.”
