County Pays Tribute to Volunteers, Interns

Contributions enhanced customer service, provided work experience

San Rafael, CA – The Marin County Board of Supervisors recently recognized 170 outstanding volunteers and student interns who completed their service with the Marin County Civic Center Volunteers program in the past year. Among 70 volunteers were four who had served since the 1990s. There were 100 interns receiving accolades.

The Marin County Department of Human Resources said honorees made significant impacts as they advocated for patients, pulled invasive plants from public lands, performed legal research, helped smokers quit, built an entrance sign for the County of Marin’s airport, tutored at Marin County Free Library branches, mediated consumer disputes, patrolled open space trails, greeted visitors, counseled elders, provided clerical support, wrote articles, and much more. Honorees earned the endorsements of their staff supervisors for formal resolutions of commendation, which were approved by the Board at its December 18 meeting.

Student Internships Coordinator Joy Fossett said students brought academic knowledge to County departments for hands-on learning.

“Interns showed enthusiasm for their projects and brought fresh perspectives to the County,” she said. “They also gained experience to help them with career decisions. After they graduate, we hope many of them will apply their talents in the public sector.”

“We are so grateful to have skilled residents who volunteer to share their experience and energy,” said Anne Starr, HR’s coordinator of volunteers. “This year’s honorees contributed all kinds of expertise, from mediation to marketing and everything in between. Their efforts supplemented the work of paid staff, allowing the county to provide more service than otherwise would have been possible.”

According to its most recent annual report, the program had 8,256 volunteers and interns serving a total of 250,789 hours across the county organization in fiscal year 2017-2018.

Among the Civic Center Volunteers roles currently available are: Marin Civic Center tour docent, legal intern, Library Beyond Walls liaison, clerical volunteer, Adopt-A-Spot beautification team leader, social media intern, senior peer counselor, open space trail maintenance volunteer, law library aide, ecosystem restoration team member, and more.

Occasionally a role can be designed to meet an individual’s interests and skills. To apply, visit www.marincounty.org or contact Anne Starr at 415-473-7167 and AStarr@marincounty.org for volunteering, and Joy Fossett at 415-473-7447 and JFossett@marincounty.org for student internships.
