Community Picnic Stimulates Healthy Food & Drink

Annual Fruit & Veggie Festival comes to San Rafael on May 4

San Rafael, CA – On May 4, there will be one place in San Rafael where families can enjoy free entertainment, play games, have fun with arts & crafts, receive cookbooks, watch food demonstrations, and taste healthy foods, all for free: The annual Fruit & Veggie Festival, hosted by the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services.

A young girl rides a stationary bike that powers a blender, which is being used to make a healthy fruit drink, at a past Fruit and Veggie Festival. The pedal-powered blender has been a popular feature of past Fruit & Veggie Festivals.
The community picnic is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marin HHS’ Health and Wellness Campus, 3240 Kerner Boulevard, in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood.

A key purpose of the event is to educate residents about healthy eating and locally grown produce and to reduce childhood obesity through public education. Visitors can learn about CalFresh, a supplementary monthly food assistance program for lower-income residents.

It’s also a promotion for Rethink Your Drink, which encourages people to drink water and healthy natural drinks instead of sugary soda. County Public Health, supported by a resolution from the Marin County Board of Supervisors, supports its “Soda Free Summer” initiative every year. It is designed to get residents to check labels for the amount of sugar in beverages and how to make healthier drinks with water, fresh fruit and herbs.

The Marin County Bicycle Coalition and the Safe Routes to School campaign are teaming up for provide a bike rodeo to teach kids how to ride bikes safely and develop their skills in the saddle. Youngsters may bring their own bikes.

Everyone is welcome, and students 13 and under need to be accompanied by an adult. Get a glimpse of a past Fruit & Veggie Festival on YouTube.
