San Rafael, CA – There is about a month remaining in a Marin County Free Library (MCFL) program that waives fines for the late returns of borrowed materials. The “fine forgiveness” period runs through the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend on Monday, January 21.
All MCFL branches are offering 'fine forgiveness.' Residents should check with other local libraries about participating in a similar program. MCFL emailed patrons and posted on its website and social media accounts when the forgiveness program began in late November. Signs have been posted inside branches as well.
Normally, fines for adult patrons are 25 cents per day for overdue items or $1 per day for items from the Link+ system, a connection with a consortium of libraries throughout California and Nevada. MCFL fees max out at $6 per item, and patrons need to pay down their balance to check out again if they owe more than $10.
“We appreciate our community’s great support of libraries and this is a way to make library use easier in the busy holiday season,” said Library Director Sara Jones.
Residents should check with their local library branches about participation in the program and the final date that fines are being waived.
