The purpose of the Medical Waste program is to protect the health of the public, health care facility personnel, and landfill personnel from exposure to medical wastes containing potentially infectious pathogenic organisms. This is accomplished by regulation of medical waste generators through inspection, complaint investigation, emergency response, enforcement, public education, and assistance to industry in regards to the handling, storage, treatment and disposal of medical waste.

The Marin County Environmental Health Services is the designated local enforcement agency (EA) implementing the medical waste program in Marin County in accordance with the Medical Waste Management Act.

For fee information, please download the EHS Medical Waste Program Fee Schedule - Effective July 1, 2011. A technology fee surcharge of $10 will be assessed on each permit separately from the permit fee in order to offset County costs associated with the permit tracking system.

If you have questions or need further information, please contact our office at (415) 473-6907.

Free Sharps and Pharmaceutical Waste Drop-Off Locations

Not all facilities take Pharmaceutical Waste. Please help us reduce volume - dump pills into a baggie. The only facilities that take controlled substances are the City of Sausalito Police Department, Novato Police Department, the Central Marin Police Authority, and the Mill Valley Police Department. This program is not intended for professionally generated medical waste.
