Gary Giacomini Preserve

Over 1500 wild and rugged acres – a true wilderness.

Rangers Recommend

  • San Geronimo Ridge Fire Road, five miles long, traverses an amazingly scenic ridgeline.
  • This preserve connects with White Hill and Cascade Canyon. It also borders Marin Municipal Water District lands above Kent Lake, forming an immense expanse of pristine forests stretching all the way to Mount Tamalpais.
  • A lush redwood canyon trail is named to honor Willis Evans, a tireless environmental advocate who spearheaded local efforts to preserve coastal streams.
  • Dogs welcome and must be leashed on trail, and under voice command on fire roads, with leash readily available.

Naturalist Notes

  • Look for the pygmy Sargent Cypress forest on windswept San Geronimo ridge. Some of the trees are hundreds of years old, but have been dwarfed by serpentine soil.
  • Diverse soils and micro-climates across the preserve provide conditions for a wide variety of trees to thrive, including redwood, madrone, Douglas-fir, oak, and bay.
  • In spring, lower elevations brighten with masses of violets. Also look for trillium, chaparral paintbrush, California poppy, fetid adder's tongue, iris, and monkeyflower.
  • To protect sensitive wildlife species, some roads and trails are subject to seasonal night closures. Observe closure signs.
  • Check out the citizen science bioblitz on iNaturalist. Add your own observations.
