Tell Us Your Accessory Dwelling Unit Story

Marin homeowners, tenants can earn money by sharing knowledge with neighbors

San Rafael, CA – The County of Marin is eager to hear success stories from residents who have created an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to provide some steady rental income and help alleviate Marin’s housing crisis by providing a home for a tenant.

The County’s Community Development Agency (CDA) also would like to hear from renters who live in ADUs. Both ADU owners and tenants are eligible to earn payments of up to $200 for participating in the storytelling process.

Anyone may participate in a survey in English, Spanish, or Vietnamese through mid-March.

CDA staff is working with a contractor, Baird & Driskell Community Planning, to create online and print materials designed to help people create more ADUs and encourage Marin’s towns and cities to do the same.

“Homeowners have questions about how to plan for, build, and finance ADUs, and the photos and videos that will come from this survey will be a great asset as real-life examples of success stories in Marin,” said CDA Planner Jillian Nameth Zeiger.

The Marin County Board of Supervisors has cited the creation and preservation of affordable housing as one of its top priorities. Marin is one of the most expensive places to live in the United States, with median monthly rents for two-bedroom apartments hovering near $3,100 and the median home price at more about $1.1 million.
