Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Won’t Seek Re-Election

Richard N. Benson will serve out his term through January 2019

San Rafael, CA – Marin County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Richard N. Benson announced today that he will not seek re-election in 2018.

First elected in 2010, Benson is serving the second of two four-year terms. He plans to serve out his second elected term, which ends in January 2019.

Benson, a 30-year resident of Novato, has been with the Marin County Assessor-Recorder’s Office since 1985. He served in most appraisal and assessment roles in the department before being elected to office.

He has served as the president of the Marin County Appraiser’s Association, and after various roles with the California Assessors’ Association, now serves as that organization’s president.

The elected Assessor-Recorder-Clerk oversees the valuation of taxable real and business personal property; recording and maintaining documents regarding property ownership, births, deaths and marriages; performing civil ceremonies; and processing marriage licenses, fictitious business names and other legal documents. The Assessor-Recorder-Clerk’s mission is to provide excellent customer service by administering property tax law, state law and local ordinances with integrity in a fair, efficient and consistent manner.
