County Fair Theme for 2019: Over the Moon!

Celebrate the anniversary of the first lunar landing July 3-7 in San Rafael

San Rafael, CA – The 2019 Marin County Fair will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing with the theme Over the Moon! during its festive run July 3-7 at the Marin County Fairgrounds in San Rafael.

The 2019 Marin County Fair poster, with images of Mount Tamalpais, a cow jumping over the moon, fireworks, a ferris wheel, and pigs and cowsThe official poster was designed by Debbie Patrick.
Themed exhibit categories will include decorated moons and paper moons, and the photography categories will include moonscapes. Since the moon is, of course, made of cheese, there will be a feature on the fair’s Blue Ribbon Stage of a “cheese of the day.”

Many other things highly valued in Marin – family, art, agriculture, and the environment – will be celebrated as well. Returning fair classics are traditional carnival rides, free concerts, and fireworks every night over the Civic Center’s Lagoon Park. Themed photography categories including barnyard buddies and trees. There will be innovative makers projects, baked goods, culinary contests, fine art, and much more.

“We developed the theme as an opportunity to honor the 50th anniversary of the landing on the moon, but also to showcase the feeling the Fair evokes from our entire community,” said Director of Cultural Services Gabriella C. Calicchio. “Celebrating art, agriculture, and community are values we hold near and dear and we are literally ‘over the moon’ with excitement in the planning for the 2019 fair.”

The fair poster was created from an original work of art by Marin County artist Debbie Patrick. The fair painting and others by Patrick will be on view in a special exhibit at the Bartolini Gallery from December 13-20.

As always, the Marin County Fair prides itself on being the Greenest County Fair on Earth with its solar-powered carousel and stage, commitment to water conservation, and a record of over 91 percent waste diversion to compost and recycling.

The fair’s headline music acts will be announced in spring 2019, and the fair’s website, www.marinfair.org, will be updated to include new information. If you have questions about entering a competitive exhibit, call 415-473-7048 or email exhibits@marincounty.org.
