Compliance Checks Successful with Sex Offenders

Probation officers team with other agencies on surprise contacts

San Rafael, CA – With Halloween approaching, the Marin County Probation Department contacted 19 registered and non-registrant sex offenders on Thursday, October 26, to check on compliance with the terms of their probation. No arrests were made.

Three law enforcement agencies, with their backs shown, talk to somebody sitting in a car at night. It requires a team effort from law enforcement agencies to make sure offenders comply with the terms of their probation.
Probation officers, Novato Police officers, state parole agents, and Marin County Sheriff’s detectives conducted unannounced searches throughout the county. Ten of the 19 offenders were contacted and 15 of the 19 residences were searched for items that qualified as violations of their probation.

After checking phones and other electronic devices, 14 of the 15 searches conducted were found to be in compliance. One offender was found in violation of probation conditions and is pending further investigation.

“It is the department’s objective to keep the community safe, especially at a high-risk time for offenders such as Halloween season,” said Probation Chief Mike Daly.

The Probation Department will continue to focus resources on and provide the highest level of supervision to the offenders with the highest likelihood of reoffending.

The department’s main goal is to collaborate with the offender’s treatment program and make every effort to assist in with rehabilitation. The department offers a balance between public safety, offender accountability, rehabilitative services and restorative practices.
