County’s Crisis Stabilization Unit to be Improved

Grant funds obtained for upgrades to behavioral health and recovery services

San Rafael, CA – Marin County is planning more than $1 million in upgrades to its Crisis Stabilization Unit in Kentfield, which provides around-the-clock psychiatric emergency services to more than 1,250 clients each year. The project, which starts in January, will double the facility’s capacity by adding five beds and two patient interview rooms, and provide a series of accessibility improvements.

The facility, operated by Marin County Health and Human Services (HHS), is at 250 Bon Air Road next to Marin General Hospital. Clients receive crisis intervention care regardless of financial status or insurance coverage. The upgrades will enable the facility to better serve all members of the public.

At the December 5, 2017, Marin County Board of Supervisors session, Murray Building, Inc. of Sonoma was awarded the $1,031,550 construction contract. The work is expected to take place between January and July 2018. California Health Facilities Financing Authority’s Mental Health Wellness Grant, awarded to Marin County in May 2016, will cover $946,000 of the project’s budget. The remaining funding will come from the Marin County Department of Public Works (DPW) Accessibility Fund and HHS’ Burton Fund.

In addition to adding more beds and interview rooms, accessibility modifications will be made to the shower room and an existing restroom. To optimize staff work areas, the space will be reconfigured and new partition walls will be erected. The project also includes improvements to mechanical systems, installation of injury-proof fixtures, and accessibility upgrades to the building’s rear entrance. The design of the project was a collaborative effort between DPW, HHS and Marin County’s Disability Access Program.

There is no anticipated impact to traffic congestion along Bon Air Road related to this project, but the neighboring hospital complex also is undergoing an expansion project. Travelers should drive with care and expect delays during peak commute hours.
