Sex Offenders Receive Pre-Halloween Search

Probation officers, Sheriff’s deputies make unannounced checks for compliance

San Rafael, CA – As Halloween night approached, the Marin County Probation Department set out October 29 to contact its 11 registered sex offenders on probation and directed them to have outdoor and porch lights turned off during the hours when trick-or-treaters might be canvassing neighborhoods.

Multiple teams of Probation officers and Marin County Sheriff’s detectives conducted unannounced searches in Fairfax, San Anselmo, San Rafael, and Novato. The offenders were contacted and their residences searched for items that constitute violations of court-ordered probation terms.

After checking home computers, phones and other electronic devices, 10 of the 11 offenders were found to be in full compliance. One arrest was made for a violating the “no alcohol” terms of his probation.

The Probation Department will continue to make it a priority to focus resources on, and provide the highest level of supervision, to those offenders with the highest likelihood of reoffending. It is the department’s objective to play a role in keeping the community safe, especially during Halloween, which is a high-risk time for sex offenders. Additionally, the Department continues to support and collaborate with treatment programs and services designed to effectively assist in the rehabilitation of these offenders.
