9th Year of Marin’s Largest Book Club Underway

‘At Night We Walk in Circles’ chosen for One Book One Marin program

San Rafael, CA – This spring, the Marin County Free Library, along with city public libraries of Marin County and community partners Book Passage and Dominican University are inviting all of Marin to read a single book. The One Book One Marin program has selected “At Night We Walk in Circles” by Daniel Alarcón for the ninth year of this countywide reading effort.

The program seeks to take the idea of a localized book club and open it up to the entire county. The wide variety of public agencies and community partners involved will host events and programming related to the book from February through May. All are invited to participate, and all events are free to the public.

The goal of One Book One Marin is to build a stronger, enriched community through library utilization, community dialogue, and the exploration of literature and culture. Organizers this year are excited about the selection of “At Night We Walk in Circles.” The story takes place in an unnamed village in Latin America and follows the narrator’s suspenseful and obsessive search to find the truth of another man's downfall. In sharp, vivid, and beautiful prose, Alarcón delivers a compulsively readable narrative and a provocative meditation on fate, identity, and the large consequences that can result from even the smallest of choices.

“We are particularly enthusiastic that ‘At Night We Walk in Circles’ is available in Spanish translation and will give us opportunities to serve the rich diversity of our county,” said Marin County Library Director Sara Jones. Library patrons will be able to check out the book in Spanish or English from any Marin County Free Library branch.

The book has received praise from well-known media outlets. The San Francisco Chronicle and National Public Radio put the book on their “Best Books of 2013” lists, and the New Yorker has placed Alarcón on its “20 under 40” list.
