San Rafael, CA – National Voter Registration Day is coming up September 23, and the Marin County Elections Department is busy planning a series of nonpartisan events September 20-25 to mark the occasion.
“We want to raise awareness as much as possible,” said Marin County Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts.
Although Marin traditionally has very high participation in elections, about 15 percent of eligible residents are not registered to vote.
Many local nonprofits are helping to organize the events, including Marin Grassroots, the League of Women Voters of Marin County, the Latino Educational Community Forum and the Center for Independent Living. Specific information about dates, times and locations is forthcoming.
“Registering voters is not just a single-day event,” said Veda Florez, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Elections Department. “We can't possibly register all of the eligible people in one day, so that's why we are turning it into a week-long event.”
Florez said the Elections Department will be present at farmers markets in San Rafael, Novato and Marin Country Mart at Larkspur Landing as well as other locations such as Stinson Beach, Marin City, Corte Madera and the San Rafael Canal area.
Volunteers are needed to help staff the voter registration tables. Call Florez at 415-299-0035 to participate.
