Man Convicted of First-Degree Murder in Marin

Killing of landscape company worker took place in San Rafael in May 2021

San Rafael, CA – A sentencing date is expected this spring for a Contra Costa County man recently convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of his landscaping company supervisor in May 2021 in San Rafael.

Miguel Jimenez Alejandre of Bay Point, near Pittsburg, on February 24 was found guilty by jury after three weeks of testimony in Marin County Superior Court. He was convicted in the death of David Nuñez Sanchez, a Pittsburg resident and Alejandre’s supervisor at a Concord-based landscaping company. Nuñez Sanchez’s body was found under brush and branches not far from his work truck at a job site on North Avenue, in the Smith Ranch area of northeastern San Rafael. His neck had been cut several times with a knife.

Judge Beth Jordan presided and has calendared the case’s next session for April 4. First-degree murder is punished at 25 years to life, so the sentence could be up to 26 years to life given the jury found the allegation that defendant used a knife to be true, which could add one additional year.

According to a San Rafael Police Department release, Alejandre confessed to detectives that he killed Nuñez Sanchez and was arrested the day after the body was found. The details about manner of death and motive have not been released. Nuñez Sanchez had failed to report to a job site in Oakland on the afternoon he’d worked in San Rafael, and he failed to report to the construction company’s headquarters the following morning.

Deputy District Attorney Daniel Madow, who handled the case for the DA’s Office, thanked the jury for its service and the San Rafael Police staff for its investigation and cooperation.

“Justice was achieved in the horrific, callous, and senseless killing of a hard-working, kind-hearted man,” Madow said. “Although the verdict will never undo the harm the defendant’s actions inflicted on the victim’s family, we hope the verdict gives his family and the community a sense of peace knowing that the just verdict was reached.”
