New Garden to be Unveiled at Fairfax Library

Special event October 29; Expansion more than doubles branch’s service area

San Rafael, CA – The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) will celebrate the completion of the long-planned Fairfax Library Garden with a public coming-out party starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 29.

A landscaper plants shrubs in the new garden outside the Fairfax Library. The new garden at Fairfax Library more than doubles the branch’s usable service area.

The garden will more than double the branch’s usable service area, increasing seating capacity and options for programming. The facility renovation includes a pathway – fully accessible for people with mobility challenges – along with a patio with benches, tables, and chairs. There are 10 newly planted trees, highlighting a garden of pollinators and native plants. The patio has more than 300 engraved pavers donated by supportive members of the community.

"We’ve been planning this garden for over four years as a way to expand our services beyond the library walls,” said Margaret Miles, Fairfax Branch Manager. “We wanted to have a way for the community to feel a part of the project. Friends of the Fairfax Library was instrumental in mounting a successful fundraising campaign and encouraging individuals and local businesses to donate an engraved paver. We’ve been overwhelmed by the community’s support.”

The family-friendly outdoor event will include:

  • a tour of the new garden
  • a fun scavenger hunt to find particular engraved patio pavers
  • a chance to create a “seed bomb”
  • live music, and
  • refreshments

The Fairfax Library is at 2097 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, across the boulevard from St. Rita’s Catholic Church. More details about the garden  are on the MCFL website. Call (415) 453-8151 for more information.
