Volunteers and Interns Thanked by Supervisors

Contributions provided work experience, enhanced County’s customer service

San Rafael, CA – The Marin County Board of Supervisors has recognized 134 outstanding volunteers and student interns who completed their service with Marin Shares (formerly known as Civic Center Volunteers) and Marinterns programs in 2019.

The group included 97 interns and 37 volunteers, among them several volunteers who had served more than 20 years.

Jennifer Flores, shown inside the Civic Center, served as a victim/witness intern in the District Attorney’s Office.Jennifer Flores served as a victim/witness intern in the District Attorney’s Office. She was one of 97 interns officially thanked by the Marin County Board of Supervisors on January 14.
The Marin County Department of Human Resources, which oversees the programs, said honorees made significant impacts. They advocated for people to stop tobacco use, led tours of the Marin Civic Center, consulted on equal employment issues, served on the Sheriff Office’s Search and Rescue Team, performed legal research, tutored at County libraries, patrolled open space trails, ushered patrons to their seats at Marin Center shows, counseled elders dealing with challenges of aging, provided clerical support, wrote articles, and much more.

Honorees earned the endorsements of their staff supervisors for formal resolutions of commendation, which were approved by the Board at its January 14 meeting.

Student Internships Coordinator Joy Fossett said honorees were among the students who participated in a new program feature called Marinterns Career Day, held in summer 2019. The educational day was designed by interns and will become an annual event. Honorees also applied their classroom knowledge in County roles allowing hands-on learning.

“These interns contributed fresh perspectives to the County,” Fossett said. “They also gained experience to help them with career decisions.”

Anne Starr, the County’s coordinator of volunteers, said volunteer honorees contributed a wide range of skills and expertise to extend the work of paid staff.

“Thanks to volunteers, the County can do more for residents than would otherwise be possible. They make Marin a better place for all.”

In fiscal year 2018-2019, the program had 8,662 volunteers and interns serving a total of 210,049 hours across the County organization. Fifteen interns were hired by the County.

Among the volunteer roles currently available are: Marin Civic Center tour docent, legal intern, Library Beyond Walls liaison, clerical volunteer, Adopt-A-Spot beautification team leader, social media intern, senior peer counselor, open space trail maintenance volunteer, law library aide, ecosystem restoration team member, and more. Sometimes a role can be designed to meet an individual’s skills and interests.
