San Rafael, CA – If you’re inspired and feel a calling toward public service, take note that the nomination period opens July 13 for local offices in the November 3, 2020, General Election.
The Elections Department is on the first floor of the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael. The nomination period ends at 5 p.m. Friday, August 7, with an extension to Wednesday, August 12, if an incumbent officeholder does not file. Seats open for nomination include:
- Marin County Board of Education and 19 school districts
- Special districts including community services districts, fire protection districts, the Marin Healthcare District, public utility districts, recreation districts, the Marin Resource Conservation District, sanitary districts, and water districts
- Cities and towns include Belvedere, Fairfax, San Anselmo, San Rafael, Sausalito, and Tiburon (municipal candidates must file nomination documents with their respective city clerk)

Candidates may pick up and file nomination papers at the Marin County Elections Department, Suite 121, Marin County Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael. Due to the pandemic, an appointment is required. The hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and until 5 p.m. on Friday, August 7. Candidates can submit their application form online as well.
In addition to an appointment, candidates visiting the office must wear a face covering and numbers of people allowed in the lobby at one time will be limited. Candidates visiting the office without an appointment will have to wait until all other appointments are completed. The appointment calendar is online at www.marinvotes.org. Candidates should not come to the Elections Department if they are feeling ill.
Staff can arrange for virtual witnessing of signatures on the candidate forms. Specific original documents must still be received in the office by the applicable deadline.
