Forum on TRUTH Act Scheduled for July 9

Law requires annual forum for input regarding ‘ICE access’ to detained individuals

San Rafael, CA – Marin County residents are invited to participate in a community forum about a California law called the TRUTH Act and the access local governments may provide to federal immigration agents.

The forum is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, in the Board of Supervisors chamber (Suite 330) of the Marin County Civic Center. Although the County government is hosting the meeting and Board President Kate Sears will serve as moderator, the Marin County Board of Supervisors will take no action on the matter.

The TRUTH Act’s longer name is the Transparent Review of Unjust Transfers and Holds Act. Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 2792 into law on September 28, 2016. It pertains to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency and its access to individuals who have come in contact with law enforcement during the 2018 calendar year.

Starting in 2018, the TRUTH Act required local governing bodies in which local law enforcement has provided ICE access to an individual to hold a community forum to receive and consider public comment. As part of the forum, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office will share data it maintains regarding the number and demographic characteristics of individuals to whom the agency has provided any ICE access.

The County hosted its first TRUTH act forum in December 2018 and more than 200 people attended. The video of that session is archived on the County website.

The July 9 meeting will be livestreamed on the County’s website and replayed later on Comcast Channel 27 for Comcast and AT&T U-Verse subscribers. Translation in Spanish will be provided for those in attendance, and personal sound receivers will be available for the hearing impaired. Written public comments may be submitted no later than Friday, July 5, to the Clerk of the Board, Suite 329, Marin County Civic Center, San Rafael, CA 94903, or via email to the Board Clerks staff.

The Board chamber is in Suite 330 of the Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael. There is plenty of free parking in the lot near the South Archway on Peter Behr Drive. Attendees should enter at the South Archway and proceed to the third floor to find the Board chamber.
