San Rafael, CA – Marin County’s amazing array of cultural resources is about to get better connected with a new network of support for the arts.
In October 2018, community arts planning forums will be hosted in each Marin supervisorial district. The first local arts and culture master plan is in development to maximize the creative potential of Marin and secure its cultural richness for future generations. The
Marin County Department of Cultural Services is working in partnership with the
Marin Cultural Association, the Marin Coalition for the Arts, and arts leaders from all over the county to create the plan, dubbed
Arts, Culture, Action! The plan
will document, capitalize, support, and enhance the county’s cultural resources to better serve all members of the community.
To roll out the plan’s debut, a town-hall-style community meeting is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Thursday, September, 6, at Marin Center’s Exhibit Hall, behind the Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium. The address is 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael.
Marin has an incredible cultural history, with talented residents ranging from world-renowned musicians to prolific fine artists and arts and crafts traditions to cutting-edge film, performance and youth arts programs. Yet the vast cultural resources are diffuse and disconnected, functioning without a cohesive vision and the necessary support structure to thrive.
Organizers said the plan’s goal is to better understand and listen to the community, support artists and arts organizations, develop an arts education plan, and ultimately develop a long-term strategy to strengthen cultural resources for all who live and work in Marin.
“A thriving cultural sector contributes to the long-term economic, environmental, social, emotional, and intellectual health of this beloved community — it benefits us all,” said Gabriella C. Calicchio, Director of Cultural Services. “We encourage everyone to get involved, take our arts survey, attend a community forum, and get your voice heard.”
In October, community arts planning forums will be hosted in each supervisorial district by its associated County Supervisor.
