San Rafael, CA – Marin County residents who have interest in fair housing policies, including for people of color and other protected classes, can apply to join a new community advisory group being formed by the County of Marin.
Vaughan Logan and other members of the Marin County Youth Commission spoke about fair housing practices during a June 2018 Board of Supervisors meeting. The Marin County Board of Supervisors plans to consider a work plan for the second phase of a process to fully assess fair housing practices in the county (the
Assessment of Fair Housing). The newly formed Community Advisory Group will analyze why there are different outcomes for residents in different communities and help develop strategies to identify and address disparities in community conditions that negatively affect access to choices in transportation, education, employment, broadband connectivity, businesses and services.
The County would like to attract a diverse group of candidates who are eager to participate, and encourage residents from all ages, races and socioeconomic backgrounds to apply. Monthly meetings will be scheduled over the next two years as the County works on its Assessment of Fair Housing.
County officials know there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to deep-rooted inequities in some Marin neighborhoods. However, addressing inequity is one of the top ongoing priorities for the Board of Supervisors. The County intends to take meaningful actions, in addition to combating discrimination, to overcome patterns of segregation and foster inclusive communities free from barriers that restrict access to opportunity based on protected characteristics, including race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, marital status, and familial status (including households with children under the age of 18, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18).
