Progress Report on Fair Housing Policy Set for June 12

Staff to present an update about removal of barriers

San Rafael, CAThe Marin County Board of Supervisors will receive an information update on progress toward completing Marin’s Assessment of Fair Housing at an evening session of the Board’s meeting on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 5:30 PM.

As a condition of receiving federal funds for block grants and housing aid, the County is required to periodically demonstrate compliance with federal fair housing law by analyzing their housing segregation and submitting plans intended to reverse it. As the official plan for satisfying this requirement, the County’s Assessment of Fair Housing will examine and publicly report on housing patterns, governmental policies and other factors affecting racial bias in housing and how patterns of segregation influence the quality of life. The Assessment will also identify goals that will be tracked over time to measure the extent to which segregation in Marin is reduced.

Since initiating the Assessment of Fair Housing Work Plan in 2016, staff has conducted an extensive community engagement process reaching over 1,400 people, from all areas of Marin, with a focus on communities most impacted by barriers to fair housing choice. A multitude of comments and suggestions that came from this process were evaluated by a Community Advisory Group and a Steering Committee and were distilled down to 37 recommendations.

The Board’s session on June 12 will be an opportunity for the Board to hear from the public and respond to the recommendations. The staff report for the workshop is available on the County of Marin Assessment of Fair Housing webpage. Spanish and Vietnamese translations are anticipated to be posted on the County website on Monday, June 11, 2018. In addition, an agenda and staff report are available on the Board of Supervisors meeting webpage and at the offices of the Community Development Agency, Suite 308, San Rafael (open Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, closed Friday).

The public can email comments regarding this hearing to the Board of Supervisors at BOS@marincounty.org and reference the hearing date and subject, "Assessment of Fair Housing."

The hearing will be held in the Board of Supervisors Chambers at 3501 Civic Center Drive, Room 330, in San Rafael. Anyone interested in these matters may appear and be heard. Spanish and Vietnamese interpretation services will be provided. Please contact Planner Molly Kron at 415.473.6279 or mkron@marincounty.org to request additional interpretation or translation services. Speakers using interpretation services will be granted additional time to testify at the hearings.  In addition, the meeting will be shown live on Comcast Channel 27 and webcast and archived on the County’s website.
