Forum on TRUTH Act Scheduled for December 6

Law requires forum for input regarding any ‘ICE access’ to detained individuals

San Rafael, CA – Marin County residents are invited to participate in a community forum about a new California law called the TRUTH Act and the access local governments may provide to federal immigration agents.

The forum is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. December 6 in the Board of Supervisors chamber (Suite 330) of the Marin County Civic Center. Although the County government is hosting the meeting and Board President Damon Connolly will serve as moderator, the Marin County Board of Supervisors will take no action on the matter.

The TRUTH Act’s longer name is the Transparent Review of Unjust Transfers and Holds Act. It pertains to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency and its access to individuals who have come in contact with law enforcement during the 2017 calendar year. Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 2792 into law on September 28, 2016.

Starting in 2018, the TRUTH Act requires local governing bodies in which local law enforcement has provided ICE access to an individual to hold a community forum to receive and consider public comment. As part of the forum, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office will share data it maintains regarding the number and demographic characteristics of individuals to whom the agency has provided any ICE access.

The meeting will be livestreamed on the County’s website and broadcast live on Comcast Channel 27 for Comcast and AT&T U-Verse subscribers. Translation in Spanish will be provided for those in attendance, and personal sound receivers will be available for the hearing impaired.

Written public comments may be submitted no later than noon December 5 to the Clerk of the Board, Suite 329, Marin County Civic Center, San Rafael, CA 94903, or via email to BOS@marincounty.org.

The Board chamber is in Suite 330 of the Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael.
