Assisted Care Advocates Needed in Marin

November 14 meeting for volunteers to help residents in assisted living

San Rafael, CA – The Marin County Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is seeking volunteers to advocate for quality of life and quality of care for residents in nursing homes and assisted living residences.

An informational presentation will take place on November 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) office, Point Reyes Room, 20 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael. It is an opportunity to learn more about the program and the rewards of helping vulnerable members of the community.

Volunteers, an important part of the ombudsman program, are asked to make at a time commitment of one year, donate a minimum of 10 hours each month, and attend staff and volunteer meetings every other month. After an orientation session, volunteers would complete a 36-hour certification training program that begins in January 2018.

The certification training provides information on the long-term care setting, the aging process, resident rights, complaint investigation and resolution, community resources, and other related topics on the elderly. It also helps participants to understand the role of the ombudsman as resident advocate.

The Marin County Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is a service of Marin HHS’ Aging and Adult Services. Volunteers are supported by ombudsman staff members who are authorized by state and federal laws to have a presence in nursing homes and assisted living residences to advocate for quality of life and quality of care for their residents.

For more information and to RSVP for the presentation, call the program office at 415-473-7446 or email ombudsman@marincounty.org.
