Symposium Focuses on Intimacy for Healthy Living

‘Live Long Live Well’ event set for May 4 in San Rafael

San Rafael, CA – As the Marin County population ages, it’s important that human connections remain strong for the sake of health and longevity. The Marin County Commission on Aging and the Aging and Adult Services division of the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) both recognize that, and that’s why they are presenting the 13th annual Healthy Aging Symposium on May 4 in San Rafael.

A man speaks at the lecturn in front of several hundred people at last year's symposiumHundreds attended the 2016 Healthy Aging Symposium.

Today, one in four Marin residents is over the age of 60. By 2030 the ratio will be one in three.

“The commission and the County are committed to convening our community on subjects that support adults in Marin to live long and live well,” said Lee Pullen, Director of Aging and Adult Services. “The focus on the event will be on human relationships as we age, including partners, spouses, friends and family.”

This event is designed to inform, educate, connect, and empower older adults and those who care for them to live healthy and meaningful lives.  This year, leaders and experts in the field will deliver thought-provoking, insightful, and stimulating presentations by delving into the topic of intimacy.

The changing relationships and dynamics with family, friends, and partners when physical and cognitive limitations, such as in the presence of Alzheimer’s or dementia, will also be discussed, including caregiving relationships under these conditions.

Featured speakers include:

  • Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., Stanford University School of Medicine
  • Eric Shapira, D.D.S, M.A., M.H.A, Aging Specialists, Inc.
  • Carol Queen, Ph.D., Center for Sex and Culture, Good Vibrations
  • Robert Nations, Senior Access

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 101 McInnis Parkway, in San Rafael. Doors are open at 8:15 a.m.
