San Rafael, CA – National Voter Registration Day is September 26, and the Marin County Elections Department is planning a series of nonpartisan events to mark the occasion.
About 20,00 people in Marin are of voting age but not registered to vote.
Traditionally Marin County has a high voter participation rate, but according to data provided by the California Secretary of State’s Office, local residents who are eligible but not registered to vote can number over 20,000.
“This is a celebration of democracy and a reminder that participation by voting is incredibly important to our country,” said Marin County Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts. “Anybody who believes registration is complicated or a bother is urged to stop by one of our events and see how easy it is.”
Events in Marin will be held during the week of September 25 through September 30. This year’s partners include the Center for Independent Living, College of Marin, Community Action Marin, the Dominican University Political Science Department, farmers markets in San Rafael and Novato, Latino Marin, the League of Women Voters of Marin County, the Marin City Community Clinic, the Marin City Community Services District, Marin Latino Leaders, the Novato Public Library, the YMCA and the YWCA.
National Voter Registration Day was created in 2012, and the Marin County Elections Department has participated each year by coordinating a week of promotions. Events will be held in various locations, including Novato and San Rafael farmers markets, as well as Dominican University and College of Marin. Watch the Elections Office Facebook page for details.
