San Rafael, CA – For the 10th anniversary of its popular One Book One Marin program, the Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is inviting readers to get “spaced out” and start flipping pages of The Martian by author Andy Weir.
One Book One Marin is designed to build a stronger, enriched community through library utilization among other goals.
“We are excited about the community participation because this book is an entertaining read and engages us all in thinking about innovation and the future of space travel,” said Library Director Sara Jones. “Andy Weir's unique success as a novelist also provides opportunity to discuss our own creative abilities. It's a book stimulating a wide range of interest and is a great fit for the 10th anniversary of this wonderful book club.”
The One Book One Marin program takes the idea of a localized book club and opens it up to the entire county. The wide variety of public agencies and community partners involved – including city libraries, Dominican University and Book Passage bookstore in Corte Madera – will host events and programming related to the book from February through May. The culminating celebration will feature Weir and KQED’s Michael Krasny discussing the book at a free public event 7 p.m. April 13 at Dominican University. Library patrons will be able to check out the book in Spanish or English from any MCFL branch plus other local libraries. All readers are invited to participate, and all events are free to the public.
“Our goal is to build a stronger, enriched community through library utilization, community dialogue, and the exploration of literature and culture,” Jones said.
In The Martian, popularized by a film of the same name, an astronaut finds himself stranded in space and completely alone with no way to signal Earth that he’s alive. But he isn’t ready to give up. Weir wrote the book to be as scientifically accurate as possible, and the Wall Street Journal called the book “the best pure sci-fi novel in years.”
