Public Works Completes 2 Slide Repairs

Roads in Inverness and Mill Valley receive safety improvements

San Rafael, CA – Engineers from the Marin County Department of Public Works (DPW) and contracted road crews recently wrapped up repairs at two roadside areas damaged by landslides over the past several years.

Work began in November 2014 and finished in early April on a 177-foot stretch of Sequoia Valley Road near Mill Valley and a 90-foot stretch of Balboa Avenue in Inverness.

The Marin County Board of Supervisors approved a $554,961 contract with Team Ghilotti of Petaluma in October 2014 for the two repairs. Financing came from the County of Marin General Fund’s slide repairs fund.

The Mill Valley work included installation of a wall with tiebacks plus drilling, excavation, road grinding, road resurfacing and guardrail installation at a site near the northern end of Sequoia Valley Road, about 440 feet south the junction of Castle Rock Road. The Inverness project involved the replacement of a pile and timber lagging wall on Balboa Avenue about 130 west of Portola Avenue.

Ernest Klock, a County Principal Civil Engineer, said the sites had been monitored for several years and inspections last fall led to the decision to make repairs to avoid potential loss of road access.

DPW continues to make progress on its slide repair schedule. Sites are monitored on the rate of earth movement over time, the proximity to homes and the volume of traffic in the area.
