Public Works Plans Slide Repairs at 2 Locations

Roads in Inverness and Mill Valley targeted for improvements

San Rafael, CA – The Marin County Department of Public Works (DPW) soon will oversee repairs of two roadside areas damaged by landslides over the past several years.

At its October 28 meeting, the Marin County Board of Supervisors approved a $554,961 contract with Team Ghilotti of Petaluma to repair a 177-foot stretch of Sequoia Valley Road near Mill Valley and a 90-foot stretch of Balboa Avenue in Inverness. Work is expected to begin by mid-November and last several months. Drivers near the work sites can expect to experience traffic delays.

The Mill Valley work will include installation of a wall with tiebacks plus drilling, excavation, road grinding and road resurfacing at a site near the northern end of Sequoia Valley Road, about 440 feet south the junction of Castle Rock Road. The Inverness project will be the replacement of a pile and timber lagging wall on Balboa Avenue about 130 west of Portola Avenue.

Financing comes from the County of Marin General Fund’s slide repairs fund.

“Public Works has been monitoring these sites for several years, and recent inspections led us to decide that these sites should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid potential loss of access on both roadways,” said Ernest Klock, a County Principal Civil Engineer.

DPW continues to make progress on its slide repair schedule. Sites are monitored on the rate of earth movement over time, the proximity to homes and the volume of traffic in the area. Most damage was sustained during storms over the past several years.
