San Rafael, CA – In June, representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide informational meetings in Marin County to inform citizens along San Francisco Bay communities about the FEMA San Francisco Bay Coastal Flood Insurance Study and impending changes to flood insurance rate maps. Marin residents who live within a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) along the bay shoreline and who have flood insurance likely will be affected by the study.
Through its Flood Hazard Mapping Program, FEMA identifies flood hazards, assesses flood risks and partners with states and communities to provide accurate data to guide them toward mitigation actions. The Flood Hazard Mapping Program is part of the National Flood Insurance Program.
Map changes might mean a higher base flood elevation and/or a change in flood risk classification for some property owners or add properties to a Special Flood Hazard Area. The preliminary maps are ready for public review and comment and will on display at the three Marin meetings. The comment and appeal period begins June 4 and ends Sept. 2.
