Sign-up for youth summer programs and enjoy a FREE lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Albert J. Boro Pickleweed Park Picnic Area in San Rafael. Participants will be able to ask about the many summer programs available for youths and register for an array of fun activities.
The Summer of Peace initiative, now known as the Summer of Opportunities Collaborative, was started in 1999 to reduce juvenile crime and increase youth engagement in fun programs and activities. The initiative is a partnership between the Marin County Probation Department, the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, the City of San Rafael, the office of County Supervisor Steve Kinsey and other community organizations.
In 2010, Canal youths expressed concerns over the lack of coordinated activities for their age group after school and during the summer months. As a result, the collaborative created a matrix of opportunities provided by a variety of agencies, translated the document into Spanish and made it available to the public. It’s been a big success thus far.
The collaborative has sponsored the summer kickoff event at Pickleweed Park so kids and parents can obtain bilingual information about local programs, opportunities and scholarships that might have been underpublicized.
The free lunch will be provided to families by the Marin County Probation Department.
