Official Canvass of Election Continues

Manual tally begins November 29; final certification due December 6

San Rafael, CA – Ballot counting continued this week for the Marin County Elections Department staff. Nearly 59,000 ballots were left to count after Election Day on November 8, including provisional ballots, vote-by-mail ballots dropped at polling places, and vote-by-mail ballots delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts said there are about 15,000 ballots left to count as of November 22.

It takes a day to prepare ballots before running them through the counting machine, she added. Provisional ballots are processed last to ensure that a person did not already vote at the polls or by mail. More information about provisional voting is on the Elections website under “frequently asked questions.”

Another results update will be posted online by 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, followed by one on Friday, December 2. The Elections staff has until December 6 to finish the counting and certify the election.

Part of the official canvass includes a manual tally of one percent of the ballots tabulated. The purpose of the manual tally is to verify the accuracy of the automated count.

The random selection of one percent of the precincts to be tallied will take place at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, in the Marin County Elections Department located in Suite 121, Marin Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael. The manual tally of the precincts selected will begin immediately thereafter. The process is open to the public.

Information about canvass procedures or the manual tally, is on our website under Policies and Procedures.
