Registrar Corrects Info from Mailed Postcard

Voters registered as No Party Preference have more time to ‘cross over’

San Rafael, CA - Marin County voters registered as No Party Preference (NPP) received a postcard recently from the Marin County Elections Department with an error on a deadline to “cross over” and vote for presidential candidates on an American Independent, Libertarian, or Democratic ballot in the June 7th Presidential Primary Election.

The card asked voters to make a selection and mail it back to the Elections Department by April 4. The date should have been April 18.

Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts said voters have been calling her office about the deadline.

“On behalf of the Elections Department, I deeply regret this error and the confusion it has caused,” Roberts said. “The card was sent in March to the military and overseas voters, and the April 4 deadline was for them. We apologize for failing to update the deadline for our local NPP voters, and we will re-send cards to those voters so people know they can still make a selection.”

The revised card, which should be in the mail by April 14, will ask NPP voters to make a selection and return it immediately. The Elections Department wants to have as many crossover requests as possible before sending the bulk of vote-by-mail ballots on May 9.

However, the Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot booklet that will be mailed to all registered voters at the end of April will include a form on the back cover for NPP voters to request one of the crossover ballots.

Those who want to vote for presidential candidates on the Green, Peace and Freedom, or Republican ballot, must re-register and choose that party.

For more information about crossover voting, please call (415) 473-6456. Additional information about voting in the Presidential Primary Election is on our website.
