The Planning Division promotes diverse and sustainable communities by regulating land use and property development.

What We Do

We are primarily responsible for writing planning policies and codes, like the Countywide Plan, the Development Code, and plans for specific communities in unincorporated Marin County. We also review and issue decisions on applications for various development permits for properties in unincorporated Marin County.

Who We Are

Our teams within the Planning Division:

  • Long Range Planning crafts policies, plans, and zoning rules, like the Countywide Plan, Development Code, and plans for specific communities.
  • Environmental Planning coordinates environmental review for projects proposed in Marin County subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
  • Current Planning reviews and issues Planning Permits, like Design Review, Variance, Use Permits, and more.
  • Code Compliance investigates and resolves alleged violations related to zoning, construction, and environmental health codes.
