Opening on Flood Control Zone #3 Advisory Board

Residents who live near Richardson Bay encouraged to apply

San Rafael, CA – The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, June 9, for an opening on the Marin County Flood Control Zone #3 Advisory Board. Applicants must reside in and be registered voters of the flood zone area, which encompasses much of Southern Marin.

The advisory board meets three or four times each year and members serve four-year terms. Those with previous board experience, an interest in improving flood mitigation, and a commitment to the community are encouraged to apply.

Flood Zone #3 includes a large portion of Southern Marin draining to Richardson Bay including the City of Mill Valley and unincorporated communities including Alto, Sutton Manor, Almonte, Tamalpais Valley, Homestead Valley, and portions of Strawberry Point. Applicants for this particular seat are especially sought from the low-lying areas of Tam Valley in the Tam Junction and Kay Park areas, also affectionately referred to as Birdland because of streets named after species of birds. Additional information about Flood Zone #3 can be found on the County of Marin’s Watershed Program website.

The Marin County Board of Supervisors formed the zone in 1956 to address the vulnerability of the area adjacent to Richardson Bay to flooding from creek and tidal action. Maintenance activities include regular servicing of pump stations, tide gates, levees and drainage ditches, and an annual vegetation maintenance program. The purpose of the advisory board is to review flood control projects as well as the proposed annual budget for the zone and, in both cases, advise the Public Works Department and the Board of Supervisors of their findings.

Apply online or learn more about the application process by calling the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors at 415-473-7331. You can request an application form via email at bos@marincounty.org or in writing at Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, Suite 329, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael CA 94903.
