Volunteers, Interns Saluted by Supervisors

Their help among 15 departments was invaluable, County leaders say

San Rafael, CA – As a sign of appreciation to those who answer a calling for community service, the Marin County Board of Supervisors honored 118 outstanding volunteers and student interns who completed their service with the County’s Civic Center Volunteers program.

Supervisor Steve Kinsey chaired the ceremony on Tuesday, August 16, and Assistant Director of Human Resources Lisa Baker emceed. Honorees received formal resolutions of commendation and hearty ovations.

The honorees’ contributions ranged from 50 hours to more than 3,400 hours, and from one semester to over 25 years. Contributing to 15 County departments, they patrolled parks and waterways, counseled elders, shelved library books, helped market the Marin County Fair, performed research, designed and built improvements for open space trails, coordinated events, entered data, welcomed clients, inspected facilities, ushered at performances, helped with office tasks, and much more.

“We are privileged to have skilled and dedicated residents who share expertise and enthusiasm,” said Anne Starr, coordinator of volunteers. “This group of honorees brought life experience in law, planning, marketing, organizing, writing, management, teaching, and more to their local government. Their efforts supplemented the work of paid employees, allowing the county to provide more service to residents.”

Student internships coordinator Joy Fossett said high school, college, and graduate students brought both academic knowledge and practical skills.

“Interns want to make a contribution while gaining workplace experience that will help them plan their careers,” she said. “County internships help them to learn firsthand about particular fields and to test career paths. We loved the positive energy of this year’s honorees!”

Among the Civic Center Volunteers roles currently available are: Marin Civic Center tour docent, clerical volunteer, accounting intern, photographer, social media intern, open space “broom buster,” patient advocate, systems security intern, Marin Center theater usher, legal intern, administrative assistant, Library Beyond Walls volunteers and interns, computer-applications intern, Law Library website intern, elections volunteer, and many more. Assignments sometimes can be designed to meet the interests and skills of a prospective volunteer or intern.
