San Rafael, CA – The Marin County Board of Supervisors have approved a five-year overarching strategy that’s been more than a year in the making – one that outlines avenues for success, innovation, inclusion, technology and many other goals. The Board gave unanimous approval to the plan during its regular meeting October 13.
County Administrator Matthew Hymel said the 5-Year Business Plan is not a one-time project, but a way of doing business that builds upon past efforts and provides for a better customer service and a better workplace. The plan is based on feedback provided by County employees and guidance provided by a steering committee that included community partners.
“The staff and community participants were encouraged to be creative, specific and courageous as we set our priorities,” Hymel said.
The plan focuses on four key subjects:
- Diversity and inclusion
- Innovation and change
- Growth and development
- Communication and engagement
Board of Supervisors President Katie Rice said the plan identifies challenges and presents strategies to take on complex issues such as Marin’s rapidly changing demographics, poverty, climate change and technological needs.
“We recognize that this plan does not provide all the answers, but it does identify very important initiatives the County will prioritize in the next five years,” Rice said. “This plan creates the foundation for excellent services and accountability that will benefit our residents for years to come.”
Now that it’s approved, the 5-Year Business Plan will be placed into the hands of a steering group that would be charged with implementation, progress monitoring and evaluation. Steering group members would include employees at different levels of the County organization – similar to the varying levels that were included in working groups as the plan took shape in 2014.
“All of us will benefit if the plan is successful, and all of us are responsible for the plan’s success,” Hymel said. “We don’t want to be victims of change. We want to embrace opportunities, enjoy the journey and make a difference for our community.”
