San Rafael, CA – The County of Marin is inviting everyone to a Silver Anniversary celebration of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a milestone piece of civil rights legislation that signified our nation’s commitment to eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities.
The celebration is co-hosted by the County of Marin Disability Access Program and the Marin Center for Independent Living. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 23 in the Board of Supervisors Chambers of the Marin County Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael.
The celebration will include a 22-panel pictorial history of the disability rights movement; a panel of guest speakers discussing their personal experience dealing with accessibility issues related to employment, transportation, housing, education, civic participation, recreation and healthcare; and experts in these areas providing information about a wide variety of accessible programs and services. Refreshments will be served.
Signed into law in 1990, the ADA prohibits discrimination and guarantees people with disabilities equal opportunities to participate in the mainstream of American life – to enjoy employment opportunities, to purchase goods and services, and to participate in state and local government programs and services.
