Election Count Continues with Manual Tally

Count from 2 precincts to take place November 17

San Rafael, CA – As a required follow-up to the November 4 General Election, the Marin County’s Registrar of Voters will conduct a public manual tally of randomly selected ballots on November 17 as it moves toward a final count.

An election worker thumbs through mailed ballots on Election Day at the Civic Center.

A selection from 1 percent of the precincts to be tallied will take place at 9 a.m. under the oversight of Registrar Lynda Roberts in compliance with California Elections Code §15360. Marin has 173 precincts, so Roberts and her staff will hand-tally ballots from two precincts.

“It will be a random process,” Roberts said. “It is done to verify the machine count and ensure accuracy. It’s a good practice to build trust in the democratic process.”

The count will take place in the Marin County Elections Office, Room 121, Marin Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael.

The Elections Office is making fast progress on the ballot count, with more than 7,400 counted since the last post-election update on November 7. Roberts said there are a few thousand ballots left to count but anticipated that most of the vote-by-mail ballots will be counted by 5 p.m. November 14. Elections staff will work on provisional ballots after all vote-by-mail ballots have been counted.

“The process is moving forward very smoothly,” Roberts said. “It just takes time.”
