The public is invited to comment on the Initial Study for the McNears Beach Park Master Plan. The 30-day public comment period begins February 6, 2017 and closes March 7, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. The Initial Study was prepared by Marin County Parks, as required by Marin County Environmental Review Guidelines and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The Master Plan will guide long-term design and planning for McNears Beach Park, including replacing aging infrastructure.

McNears Beach Park Detail

Set in a beautiful sheltered cove with mature landscaping, this 55 acre regional park is located along the shores of San Pablo Bay in San Rafael, southeast of China Camp State Park. The fishing pier is extremely popular—anglers fish for sturgeon, stripped bass, shark, perch, bat ray, halibut, and crab. Facilities include a swimming pool, snack bar, sand volleyball courts, several group picnic areas of varying size, expansive turf areas, and newly renovated tennis courts. The pool and the snack bar operate during the summer season only. The narrow, bayside beach offers a fun, safe place for general beach recreation and easy carry-in boat access for kayaks and canoes. McNears is a designated "trailhead" on the San Francisco Bay Area Water Trail, an ongoing effort to create a network of launch and landing sites to inspire people in human-powered boats and beachable sail craft to explore the San Francisco Bay. The pier and parking are accessible. With all these amenities, McNears has something for everyone. Visit park reservations to find out how to reserve a large group area at McNears Park. Dogs are prohibited, except service animals. The phone number is (415) 446-4424.

Water Testing at McNears Beach: Marin County Environmental Health Services (EHS) monitors ocean, bay, and freshwater sites in Marin County. McNears Beach Park is one of 28 sites that are sampled once a week from April 1 through October 31 to determine if a beach meets California water quality standards for recreational water contact. The EHS works cooperatively with Marin County Parks to collect water samples and post advisory signage as needed at the sampling sites. Visit the EHS Water Quality Testing Program webpage for more information. Results from weekly sampling are available on the webpage (in the "Beach Water Quality Information" document), on the Heal the Bay website, and by calling the EHS beach hotline at (415) 473-2335.
