Marin County Parks and Open Space Department

The Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD) manages approximately 155 miles of fire roads and trails on 34 open space preserves. Certain fire roads and trails are temporarily closed because of wet weather conditions, natural hazards, wildland fire, construction activities, and/or resource restoration projects. Fire roads and trails are closed to protect natural resources and user safety. Depending on site conditions, closures may affect some or all uses including bicyclists, equestrians, pedestrians, and vehicles.

MCOSD posts closure signs at trailheads to notify visitors of current use restrictions and to remind visitors to use alternate routes. Please cooperate with closure restrictions while visiting MCOSD lands; violators are subject to citation. Conditions and closures may change without notice on a daily basis due to weather, natural hazards, wildland fire, and/or MCOSD activities. Visit related pages to learn about safety, MCOSD rules and regulations, and MCOSD policies.

Special Advisories

Beginning Monday, April 16, 2012 through Sunday, May 6, 2012, MCOSD will conduct planned maintenance work on the 680 Trail in preparation for the grand opening of the trail later this May. Segments of the trail will be closed to all use following the schedule below:

  • April 16 through April 20: The eastern segment from Luiz Ranch Fire Road to the San Domenico Fire Road.
  • April 23 through April 27: The middle segment from San Domencio Fire Road to the “saddle” on the San Domenico Fire Road.
  • April 30 through May 6: The western segment from the top section of the San Domenico Fire Road to the Gunshot Fire Road.

Seasonal (or weather- and soil- related) trail restrictions remain in effect for the open segments of the trail during maintenance work. Do not ride bicycles or horses on the 680 Trail until it is officially opened for such use. Please direct questions to Supervising Equipment Operator Carl Szawarzenski at cszawarzenski@marincounty.org or 415.473.2054; or Superintendent Brian Sanford at bsanford@marincounty.org or 415.473.7473.

As part of the San Geronimo Valley Upland Habitat Restoration Project, repairs to the Willis Evans Trail were completed October 2011. Newly repaired roads and trails are prone to damage from bicycle tires and horse hooves, especially during or after a storm that causes the surface to soften. The Willis Evans Trail needs to cure during the winter season before it is ready for multiuse. Please heed the seasonal closure in effect and do not ride bicycles or horses on the Willis Evans Trail.
